Manifesto — ten things we believe

A designer solves problems. The medium comes second.

  1. .01
    .01

    We see people, not users.

“Users” is a word for a chart. On the other end of every brief is a real person, stuck somewhere. We start with them, not with a deliverable.

  2. .02
    .02

We listen longer than is comfortable.

Most problems hide behind what people say. We stay in the conversation until we hear what they mean, from the client, their team and the people they serve.

  3. .03
    .03

The medium is a decision, not a default.

Sometimes the answer is a website. Sometimes it’s software, a service or a whole business. We pick the medium after we understand the problem, never before.

  4. .04
    .04

    Thinkers who ship.

The people who define the problem are the people who design and build the answer. Strategy, brand, product and code live in the same heads, so nothing gets lost in a handoff.

  5. .05
    .05

    No salespeople. No middlemen.

You talk to the people doing the work, from the first call to launch. No account managers translating, nobody selling you something we haven’t thought through.

  6. .06
    .06

Just because we can doesn’t mean we should.

We don’t chase trends or add features because they’re possible. The best answer is often smaller than anyone expected.

  7. .07
    .07

    Words are design, too.

Most of what people experience is read, not seen. The message, the labels and the sentence on the button get the same care as the pixels.

  8. .08
    .08

Craft is a form of respect.

For the people who will use what we make, and for the clients who trust us to make it. We don’t settle for good enough, and the details are where it shows.

  9. .09
    .09

We own outcomes, not just files.

Each of us has a stake in the work. When it ships, we stay invested in whether it actually works.

  10. .10
    .10

One team. One project. All in.

Our whole collective on your problem. Ideally one project at a time, and never more than we can give everything to.
